Date:08/25/2017

July 15, 2017: Prof. Shiyin Liu, as one of the Upper Indus Basin-Network (UIB-N) members, was invited to attend the "Regional Meeting on Upper Indus Basin Network-Indus Forum Collaboration" held by the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Kathmandu, Nepal, during May 22-25, 2017. The Upper Indus River is shared across borders amongAfghanistan, Pakistan, China and India, while the Lower Indus River is the most important agricultural areas in Pakistan and western India that accounts for most of the nation's agricultural production. The Lower Indus River is extremely sensitive to climate change due to the high portion of its flow derived from glaciers of the Upper Indus River. In terms of the complex geographical pattern of the Indus River and the communication difficulties between four countries who are sharing the river, the ICIMOD initiated the UIB-N program with the involvement of scientists from member countries and the European and United America to jointly study climate change impact on water resources with the financial support of the Norwegian, UK and Australian Government. In addition to discussing the progress of UIB-N, this conference also discussed to finalized the Indus Forum (IF) project proposal to World Bank, especially the cooperation mechanism between different member countries. The group visited the ICIMOD Godavari Knowledge Park after the conference.

Prof. Yinsheng Zhang of the Institute of Tibetan Plateau, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Tong Jiang and Prof. Jianqing Zhaiof the National Climate Center, and Prof. Qinghua Cai of Wuhan Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, were also invited to attend the conference.
